X Marks The Spot
Although my generation did not yet have a name, anyone born between 1965 and 1980 would become part of what is now referred to as Generation X. I am a proud first-year Generation Xer. We have lived in two different centuries and two separate millennia. We have survived chickenpox, measles, AIDS, swine flu, COVID, and, for many of us, cancer. We've gone from rotary-dial phones to the communicators/computers we carry in our back pockets.We got out of the Camaro, and both cocked our heads, listening for sirens. Had we gotten away with it, I thought to myself? Did we really just rob a bank? There were only the sounds of New River, so we headed inside my house with the pillowcase full of cash.I sat in my car, trying to digest what had just happened. I wondered how I would tell Traci and the girls. Never one to prolong tough things, I called Traci. When she answered, I said, "Dr. Balley told me I have a tumor on my left tonsil, and he's pretty sure it's cancer."In a life, moments become days, days blend into months, and years fade into decades. The most important thing I learned while reliving my story is that all we really have is right now, and the only thing that matters is right now, because in the end, nothing else will matter...
